Heatwave warning

[Updated 2 Dec] A severe heatwave is forecasted for the Top End, East Arnhem and Big Rivers (Katherine) regions over the next few days.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Heatwave Service provides heatwave assessments and forecast updates. NT WorkSafe is advising businesses and workers to take the necessary action to prevent heat stress and other heat related problems at work.

Heat related illnesses range from heat rashes, heat cramps and dehydration to heat exhaustion and heat stroke which can be fatal.

Symptoms of heat related illnesses can include:

  • excessive sweating,
  • muscle cramps,
  • nausea and vomiting.

Some safety tips to help guard against heat related illness include:

  • Drink water regularly.
  • Use shade protection, a hat and sun screen.
  • Check your personal protective equipment is appropriate for the type of work being done and the amount of sun you are exposed to.
  • Schedule work to avoid the hottest part of the day.
  • Share the workload.
