[Updated] Product Safety Recall coloured sand contaminated with asbestos

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission has issued a third product safety recall for coloured sand used in art and craft activities and sensory play, in addition to the two issued on 12 and 13 November.

The product recall is due to concerns the sand contains a low level of Tremolite and/or Chrysotile asbestos.

Advice to workplaces with the recalled products

  • Stop using these products. Do not allow children or adults to play with or handle the affected sand.
  • When in sealed containers and in in use (e.g. in storage, on a shelf, cupboard), isolate these in a secure area preventing unauthorised access with appropriate signage. These can be left there until controlled collection and disposal occurs.
  • For areas where such products are being used and not contained (e.g. a play table):
  • The same approach should be taken for those areas used recently for such play/use activities that haven’t been cleaned to ensure any residues are cleaned up. Presence of coloured sand particles provide a visual queue for cleaning.
  • Options for disposal may become available via a supplier of the product. Contact the relevant supplier to find out about any further recall, refund, collection, and/or disposal information.
  • Local asbestos removalists/assessors may also be able to assist with disposal.
