Workplaces urged to stay focused on safety this festive season
NT WorkSafe urges Territory businesses and workers to focus on working safely leading-in to the festive season.
NT WorkSafe Executive Director Peggy Cheong said the safety of everyone at work should remain the top priority no matter how busy, demanding, or exciting this time of the year can get.
“It’s easy to get caught up in the holiday rush and overlook safety as we try get things done.”
“The pressure to finish off tasks within tight end of year deadlines and the anticipation towards the holiday break may compel workers to take risky shortcuts which can lead to serious incidents,” Ms Cheong said.
“It’s important for businesses to maintain safety as their priority and ensure their workers make it to Christmas healthy and safe."
“Employers must have a risk management plan to identify hazards and mitigate risks, and must ensure all their workers, including new staff, are adequately informed and trained to undertake their work safely.”
“I’m encouraging employers to set reasonable targets and workloads that won’t force their employees to consider taking shortcuts.”
“Workers who feel they have to take shortcuts that compromise safety should speak up and talk to their supervisor or manager about the issue.”
“Workers who feel that their safety concerns are being ignored should contact NT WorkSafe on 1800 019 115 to raise these concerns,” said Ms Cheong.
“At the end of the day, we want all Territorians to have a safe and merry Christmas and see in the New Year.”
