Inaugural Electrical Safety Week starts next week

The inaugural electrical safety week starts next week in the Northern Territory from 4 to 8 September 2023. The aim of the week is to promote electrical safety in the home and workplace, with the goal of reducing the number of electrical related injuries, fatalities and property damage due to fires.

NT WorkSafe Executive Director Peggy Cheong, who is also the Northern Territory’s Electricity Safety Regulator, said it is important to create an annual event in the Northern Territory to promote electrical safety given how critical electricity is in our modern society.

“We are surrounded by and use electricity every day, and as we have tragically seen over the past few years, electricity can cause serious injuries and death.”

“More recently we have seen an increase in property damage due to fires linked to issues with solar panel installations,” said Ms Cheong.

“We are holding free webinars this year for current solar PV systems owners or people who are looking to purchase a solar PV system for their home or business.”

“I encourage everyone who has, or is considering in investing in a solar PV system, to register in one of our free webinars,” Ms Cheong said.

The inaugural Electrical Safety Week comes as the Northern Territory reforms and modernises its electrical safety laws.

The new Electrical Safety Act 2022 was passed last year, with the regulations scheduled for public comment later this year. The new laws which will cover both homes and workplaces is scheduled to commence on 1 July 2024.

A video detailing the changes to the Northern Territory’s electrical safety laws is available on NT WorkSafe’s YouTube channel.
