Safety alert issued after apprentice falls from roof after electric shock

NT WorkSafe has issued a safety alert reminding electrical contractors and workers of the electrical risks that could exist in ceiling spaces and the requirement to manage the risk of falls.

The alert also reminds home and commercial property owners of the need to regularly test Residual Current Devices (RCDs) fitted to their property.

The alert comes after a third year apprentice electrician was injured two weeks ago in the Northern Suburbs after receiving an electric shock and falling from a roof.

NT WorkSafe Acting Executive Director Anthony Waite urged electrical contractors and workers to remember to always de-energise supply and isolate the equipment or circuits before starting work to eliminate the risk of electric shock or electrocution.

“Electrical workers should always lock-out and tag-out to prevent accidental re-energisation, and always test before you touch,” said Mr Waite.

“With Christmas just around the corner and the rush to get things done before the holidays, I’m asking all Territorians who are still at work to slow down and put safety first.”

“Regardless of what work you do, follow your safe work procedures, don’t cut corners so you can have a safe and happy Christmas.”
