Territory workplaces urged to take part in National Safe Work Month
Northern Territory businesses and workers are encouraged to get involved in National Safe Work Month events in the Territory this October.
The 2023 national theme is “For everyone’s safety, work safely”, encouraging all people at work to do their part in building a safe and healthy workplace.
NT WorkSafe Executive Director Peggy Cheong said different events have been organised throughout the month for people to participate in, with the goal of placing the focus on workplace safety and helping Territory workplaces achieve better health and safety outcomes.
“I encourage all workplaces to hold a SafeTea event in October, where everyone can engage in important work health and safety conversations.”
“Having a chat about near misses that have occurred or possible hazards at your workplace over a cup of tea or coffee is a great place to start.”
“With the Top End entering the cyclone season, and Central Australia entering their bushfire season, a SafeTea event is a good opportunity to go over the emergency plans for your workplace”
“NT WorkSafe is hosting a range of information sessions covering various topics relevant to Territory workplaces.”
“All The information sessions are available in-person and online, and attendance is free,” Ms Cheong added.
The information sessions include a joint presentation from NT WorkSafe, the Anti-Discrimination Commission and the Fair Work Commission on workplace bullying and the role of each agency plays in such an incident. Australia's pre-eminent occupational heat stress consultant, Dr Matt Brearley will also be presenting information on managing heat stress.
The month will conclude with a mock trial to provide an insight into the prosecution process of a work health and safety incident.
