New Executive Director appointed for NT WorkSafe

Following a national recruitment process, Mr Grant Hastie has been appointed as the new Executive Director for NT WorkSafe, starting on 25 August 2025.

Mr Hastie joins from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland where he has worked since 2008. In his current role, Mr Hastie is the Chief Safety Advisor and Director of the Hazardous Chemicals Unit and has been since 2019.

Mr Hastie has also held roles as the Acting Executive Director of the Specialised Health and Safety Services and Acting Director of the Occupational Health and Hygiene Unit.

As a senior member of Queensland’s Specialised Health and Safety Services Leadership Team, Mr Hastie has been actively engaged in matters related to emerging trends of hydrogen and renewables industries.

Mr Hastie’s experience is underpinned by a solid technical background, having previously worked as a dangerous goods advisor and on-call HAZMAT Scientific Advisor with the Queensland Fire Department, as well as an occupational and environmental scientist with Queensland’s Department of Mines and Energy.

Mr Hastie’s qualifications include a Master of Applied Science from the Queensland University of Technology and the Executive Master of Public Administration from the Australia and New Zealand School of Government and Griffith University.

Mr Hastie’s appointment brings a valuable combination of regulatory experience, specialist technical expertise and a collaborative approach to keeping workplaces functioning safely.

Attorney-General’s Department Acting Chief Executive Officer Ms Leonique Swart said she looked forward to welcoming Mr Hastie to the Territory and the department’s executive leadership team and anticipated he will work proactively with our small businesses and major industries to keep our most valuable resources, our people, safe at the places they work.

On his commencement with NT WorkSafe, the Attorney-General will appoint Mr Hastie to the following statutory positions:

  • Work Health Authority
  • Electrical Safety Regulator
  • Chief Inspector Radioactive Ores and Concentrates.
