Changes to the Electrical Safety Regulations
Amendments are being considered to Part 8 of the Electrical Safety Regulations 2024.
It is intended that the Regulations are amended so that Part 8 will not take effect on 1 July 2026.
Division 1 of Part 8 under the Regulations requires:
- The seller of a property must give the buyer a notice about possible electrical safety risks.
- The buyer of a property must fix the electrical safety risks detailed in the notice.
Division 2 of Part 8 under the Regulations requires:
- The seller of a property must give the buyer a notice on the installed safety switches in the property, and a copy of the notice sent to the Electrical Safety Regulator.
- The buyer of a property must install safety switches, if none are installed.
- Landlords must install and test safety switches in their rental properties.
- Electricians must not work on an electrical installation unless a safety switch has been installed.
Amendments are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks and further information on the amendments and any intended date of commencement will be provided once amendments are made.
However, it is intended that Part 8 will not take effect on 1 July 2026.
