Safety alert issued after worker seriously injured by falling excavator bucket
NT WorkSafe has issued a safety alert after a worker was seriously injured late Wednesday afternoon from a falling excavator bucket at a Darwin construction site.
Preliminary findings from NT WorkSafe’s enquires showed disturbing similarities with a workplace incident in 2019 which resulted in the death of a 30-year-old worker.
Northern Territory Work Health and Safety Regulator Grant Hastie said he was disappointed that some in the industry were still not taking workplace safety seriously, despite NT WorkSafe issuing a safety alert and widespread media coverage of a court case over a 2019 workplace death that resulted in a record $1.14 million fine.
“Transporting smaller excavator buckets in the main bucket unsecured is dangerous. And it is disappointing to hear some people in industry are calling this standard industry practice.”
“I suggest industry reconsiders this standard industry practice before another serious incident occurs,” Mr Hastie said.
