Stay safe, buy smart, and enjoy Territory Day 2025

As fireworks return on Territory Day celebrations, NT WorkSafe encourages everyone to enjoy the night responsibly, follow the rules, and keep safety front of mind.

With five hours to use fireworks between 6 pm and 11 pm on Tuesday 1 July – buy only what you can safely ignite during the approved periods. Any leftover and defective fireworks must be handed in to NT WorkSafe for safe disposal.

Excess fireworks don’t just go to waste – they can also land you with a fine.

2025 approved periods

The approved periods for 2025 are:

  • Sale of fireworks –Tuesday 1 July, 9 am to 9 pm
  • Use of fireworks – Tuesday 1 July, 6 pm to 11 pm
  • Possession of fireworks – Tuesday 1 July, 9 am to Wednesday 2 July, 12 noon

Anyone caught igniting or in possession of fireworks outside of these approved times could face a fine which has now increased to $1,890.

Where to buy and light fireworks legally

Only purchase fireworks from licenced retailers and buy the quantity you can safely let off within the approved period of time. See the full list of licensed retailers here.

You may let off fireworks in private and public spaces, except:

  • Mindil Beach;
  • Designated community Territory Day events.

If you live in a complex or an apartment, check your body corporate restrictions before planning to light fireworks on-site.

Fireworks safety tips

Fireworks are explosive and can cause serious injury if not handled correctly. If you are going to light your own, follow the safety tips:

  • Ensure that ignition sites are cleared of any flammable materials such as dry grass or mulch.
  • Read the safety labels on each firework.
  • Light one firework at a time.
  • Closely supervise children and never give fireworks to children under 12.
  • Keep a hose or buckets of water or sand nearby to put out any fire.
  • Wet down all fireworks debris after use.

For more information, read the Celebrate Territory Day the Safe Way bulletin and poster for more fireworks safety tips.

Disposing of used fireworks safely

Spent fireworks can still pose a fire, damage to the property and the environmental. After celebrating with fireworks:

  • clean up after yourself
  • wet down all fireworks debris
  • place all used materials including associated litter and fireworks cartridges in the bin.

What to do with unused and defective fireworks

It is illegal to keep fireworks after 12 noon on Wednesday 2 July. Call NT WorkSafe on 1800 019 115 to organise handing in of fireworks for safe disposal. Do not:

  • store unused fireworks for future use as they can deteriorate over time and become unsafe;
  • throw them in the bin or dump them as it may become safety risk to others.

Interstate visitors – leave fireworks behind

The public sale, use and possession of fireworks without a permit is illegal all year round in other jurisdictions.

If you’re a visitor from interstate on Territory Day, don’t attempt to take fireworks back to your home state or territory.
