Revised Australian Standard for solar PV installations

On 19 November 2021, Standards Australia published a revised standard AS/NZS 5033:2021 Installation and safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays, replacing the existing standard AS/NZS 5033:2014.

The standard revision aims to provide clear and relevant guidance to support safe systems and practices for industry professionals and consumers. The standard has been restructured to promote better readability and provide methods to improve installation safety. AS/NZS 5033 is referenced in AS/NZS 3000, commonly known as the Wiring Rules, which is called up in the Northern Territory Electricity Reform Act 2000 and associated regulations.

Solar PV installers have a responsibility to be familiar with the changes required for installing solar PV arrays and installers have a requirement to comply with both AS/NZS 5033 and AS/NZS 3000.

Transition period

A six month transition period is in place where solar PV arrays can be installed to either AS/NZS 5033:2014 or the new AS/NZS 5033:2021 standard, however whichever standard is selected, the whole standard must be followed for the installation (i.e. no picking different sections between the two versions to follow).

From Wednesday 1 June 2022 AS/NZS 5033:2021 will be enforced as a minimum requirement in accordance with the Electricity Reform Act 2000 and Regulations.
