International Women’s Day: Women of WorkSafe

Today is International Women’s Day, where we celebrate all women whose determination and courage changed history – paving the way for a more equal, inclusive and progressive society.

This year’s theme is Count Me In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress, a call to value women’s inclusion and right to economic empowerment.

NT WorkSafe proudly joins in celebrating the achievements of women around the world. Over half of our workforce are women and believing in the power of women to drive positive change, we provide them with equal opportunities to learn and lead.

In honour of this day, we recognise two of our remarkable women in NT WorkSafe who recently earned their Diploma of Government in Workplace Inspection. Their dedication and expertise exemplify the vital role women play in ensuring the Northern Territory maintains the highest standard when it comes to workplace health and safety.

Maria Rigas

Maria leads NT WorkSafe’s Regulatory Compliance team, who responds to various workplace incidents and safety concerns by directing compliance to ensure health and safety at work is improved.

“I recently completed the Diploma of Government, and believe this program has assisted with ensuring a consistent practice for inspectors in the Territory and with other jurisdictions nationally. This program has also allowed us to unpack our practice, gain different perspectives on what good looks like and confirm that we are on the right path.”

On why she thinks investing in women is important, Maria said it promotes equality in the workplace. “Women bring a different perspective and contributions to a team. We share learnings with others and utilise it across others areas in our immediate and wider community.”

Jade Albion

Territory born and bred, Jade is one of our Senior WorkSafe Inspectors in the WHS Assurance team, providing advice and information to Territory businesses and workers through proactive safety campaigns.

According to Jade, the world is constantly changing and the workplace is no exception. This has challenged herself to build confidence, uphold a professional reputation by keeping up with industry and commit to continuous learning and improvement.

She said, “I love my role in NT WorkSafe. With the recent Diploma of Government opportunity given to me, I’ve become more driven to make a significant contribution towards having healthier and safer workplaces here in the Territory.”

“I believe providing encouragement and opportunity for women creates the flow-on effect. When we support the opportunity for women to grow, her community around her grows too.”
