Key injury claims information

This info graphic shows there were a total of 2194 workers' compensation claims in the Northern Territory for the year 2019-20. 12.5% of those claims were in the construction industry and 30.2% of construction claims were for serious injuries.

This infographic shows there were two fatalities in construction and total construction claims resulted in 1027 total lost time in weeks and $6,899,412 was paid in benefits.

  • Claims where the worker needed at least one week of due to their injuries are considered serious injuries.

Injury claims by age and gender

The image shows two bar graphs detailing injury claims by age and gender. In the age graph, 11.6% of injuries occured in workers under 25, and 25% of workers under 25 were seriously injured. 33.5% of injuries occured in the 25 to 34 age bracket, and 33.7% of injured worker in that age bracket were seriously injured. 20.4% of injuries occured in the 35 to 44 age bracket, and 30.4% of injured workers in that age bracket were seriously injured. 14.2% of injuries occured in the 45 to 54 age bracket, and 25.6% of injured workers in that age bracket were seriously injured. 16.4% of injuries occured in the 55 to 64 age bracket, and 28.9% of injured workers in that age bracket were seriously injured. 4% of injuries occured in the 65+ age bracket, and 36.4% of injured workers in that age bracket were seriously injured. In the gender graph, 94.5% of injured workers were male, 30.8% seriously injured, and 5.5% of injured workers were female, with 20% serious injured.

Main three occupations seriously injured

This infographic shows 13.3% of the construction injuries claims were by electricians, 12% by carpentry and joinery tradesperson and 8.4% of injury claims by plumbers.

Main three industry sub-groups by serious injury

This infographic shows 22.9% of the construction injuries claims were in electrical services industry sub group; 14.5% in the non-residential building construction industry sub group, and 10.8% in residential building construction.

Main three mechanisms of serious injury

This infographic shows the main three mechanisms of injury for construction claims were 34.9% being hit by moving object; 22.9% body stressing; and 21.7% falls, trips and slips of a person.

Break down by main mechanism of serious injury

  • The three main injury groups resulting from being hit by a moving objects were:

    55.2% wounds, lacerations, amputations and internal organ damage; 20.7% traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injury; and 17.2% fractures.

    The main four incident type were:

    • Being Hit By Moving Object (41.4%)
    • Being Hit By Falling Objects (24.1%)
    • Being trapped by moving machinery or equipment (13.8%)
    • Being trapped between stationary and moving objects (13.8%)

    Main body areas injured were:

    • Finger (20.7%).
    • Thumb (13.8%).
    • Hand (13.8%).

  • The main two injury groups resulting from body stressing were:

    84.2% traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injury; and 10.5% musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases.

    The three main incident types were:

    • Muscular stress while lifting, carrying, or putting down objects (47.4%)
    • Muscular stress with no objects being handled (31.6%)
    • Muscular stress while handling objects other than lifting, carrying or putting down (15.8%)

    Main body areas injured were:

    • Back (combined) (52.6%)
    • Knee (10.5%)

    61.1% traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injury; 22.2% wounds, lacerations, amputations and internal organ damage; and 16.7% fractures.

    The three main incident types were:

    • Falls on the same level (61.1%)
    • Falls from a height (33.3%)

    Main body areas injured were:

    • Knee (22.2%)
    • Lower leg (16.7%)
    • Ankle (11.1%)
    • Lower back (11.1%)
