In-house electrical licence
An in-house electrical licence is a new kind of electrical licence in the Territory that is similar to an electrical contractor licence. This kind of licence is intended for businesses which employ electrical workers to undertake electrical work incidental to the businesses operations including wiring of the in-house licence holder's businesses’ premises and capital equipment.
Examples of businesses which might hold an in-house electrical licence include:
- mining companies
- electricity network providers
- manufacturers.
Unlike an electrical contractor licence, an in-house electrical licence does not entitle the licensee to offer to perform electrical work for the public (e.g. carry on an electrical contracting business).
To be eligible to apply for an in-house electrical licence, an applicant must:
have at least one owner, partner or employee who has held an unrestricted electrical work licence for a minimum of two years
the person above must be able to demonstrate evidence of practical experience throughout the duration of that two year period
have at least one owner, partner or employee who has successfully completed the units of competency (contractor course) approved by the Electrical Safety Regulator.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an in-house electrical licence:
- the applicant, or at least one owner, partner or employee of the applicant, must hold a current unrestricted electrical work licence
- the person holding the unrestricted electrical work licence must have held the licence for at least two years
- the person holding the unrestricted electrical work licence must have successfully completed the units of competency (contractor course) approved by the Electrical Safety Regulator
- the applicant must demonstrate that any electrical work performed under the electrical contractor licence will be performed by the holder of an electrical work licence (or a person under the supervision of an electrical work licence in accordance with the Electrical Safety Act 2022)
- the applicant must hold at least $5,000,000 of public and products liability insurance for liability arising from personal injury or property damage from the electrical work performed under the licence.
Nominated person on in-house electrical licence
An in-house electrical licence must be endorsed with the name of at least one owner, partner or employee (nominated person) who:
- has successfully completed the units of competency (contractor course) approved by the Electrical Safety Regulator. This includes:
- UEEEL0040 (Develop Compliance Policies and Plans to conduct an Electrical Contracting Business)
- UEEEL0002 (Apply Currency of Safe Working Practices and Compliance Verification of Electrical Installations)
- holds a current unrestricted electrical work licence and has held the unrestricted electrical work licence for a minimum of two years.
An in-house electrical licence may have more than one nominated person at a time. However, a person may only be a nominated person for one in-house electrical licence at a time.
In-house electrical licences are issued for a period up to three years.
